Pmax preys on the weakest in the herd. The strongest will not only survive but evolve. AIOs are where smart money/advertisers are focused and reality is that google’s AI teams don’t actually talk to each other so PMax has no advantage in surfacing ads in AIOs and likely won’t for many years.
i asked a google rep for one of my client brands how they were thinking about the cannibalization from gemini at the top of the SERP and they hinted that they were working on a way to serve ads in that area. one would surmise that they would deploy it through pmax.
so we shall see!
imo it means that we'll end up back at square one, with ads being weaved into the answers - in a way that hopefully doesn't kill the usefulness of the the AI summary.
